Backgammon: Playing it safe

Backgammon: Playing it safe

In all aspects of life, the main key to winning is strategy. One must develop and work out beforehand, a scheme, program, or method for the accomplishment of the objective, and in a game, the objective is to WIN. This is a very important fact, especially when playing backgammon, where a huge part of winning is relied on luck, materialized by 2 pieces of dice. With these circumstances in backgammon, senses are heightened and the science and art of using all the forces are mastered in order to execute effectively, and hold the upper hand. With strategy, it is unlikely for you to loose in backgammon.

Problem strikes when strategy, due to uncontrollable circumstances, fails you and when luck is leaning on the other end. The best thing to do in backgammon is relax, gather your nerves, and hedge your bets for a while, until lady luck finally sits on your shoulders once again.

Here are some points you might consider to save your pot from complete drain.

1. In backgammon, do not be afraid to use a safe play. Leave no blots, or leave volts only in positions where the opponent is unlikely to hit. Even when you are not ahead of the race or pip count, but you have the weaker home board and your opponent has 4 or more points made in his, safe play is the way to go. Imagine a board where you have fewer men back and you do not hold an anchor in your opponent's board, nor does he have blots on his inner board. Safe play is one of the best, if not the only option you have.

2. Use a strong formation. Resort to a prime six. The six consecutive made points gets an opposing checker trapped behind a prime cannot escape until the prime is broken. It will help your timing in this game. This is a basic play in Backgammon.

3. Although you are trying to stay on the safe side, immobilizing your pieces is still a bad idea. A Backgammon player must remember that pieces are there to be at your disposal. If you leave them as is, these backgammon pieces will not necessarily help you with your game, and may even be imperil your chances of winning.

And, of course, if these basic plays cannot help your losing streak in the risks of Backgammon, then it may be time to call in allies. Calling for help from what we will call Backgammon Expert Associates may prove to be advantageous, either with the hints they give, or the luck they might bring.

Bear in mind, these are mere segues to smoothen the transition from a loss, to a win. Backgammon, as with all games, still means risk. So when you have recovered your rhythm, go back to playing the game. At certain times in backgammon, risks are always worth trying, both for the prize, and the reward of experience.
